23 of the Best Fantasy Trilogies to Get Lost In

How many have you read?

the 20 best fantasy trilogies

Thanks to the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, many fantasy readers have grown to expect their stories to come in the shape of trilogies. While this structure can sometimes get away from the author’s original intent—A Song of Ice and Fire was initially envisioned as three books, for instance—the fantasy trilogy remains a staple of the genre. And as the genre has matured, its themes, scope, and vision have expanded the classic epic structure introduced by Tolkien’s foundational work. But never let it be said that epic fantasy doesn’t still have its place within the genre.

No matter your preference, here are some of the best fantasy trilogies to read.

Our Favorite Fantasy Trilogies

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

By J.R.R. Tolkien

No list of fantasy trilogies could be complete without this titan. Finished in 1949, The Lord of the Rings is as relevant today as it was the day Tolkien sat down to write it. Even if you haven't read the series, you're likely familiar with parts of the plot (or at least some of the characters) due to Peter Jackson's Academy Award-winning film adaptations.

The amazing part of Tolkien's work, though, is that the prose and the beauty of Tolkien's world still delivers, even if you know what's coming.

The Godblind Trilogy

Godblind

Godblind

By Anna Stephens

hard fantasy books that are both magical and logical

Mistborn

By Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson's original Mistborn trilogy has everything that a fantasy fan could ask for: Heists, compelling characters, interesting magic systems, and amazing world-building. As has become typical of Sanderson's work, you can choose just how much you want to invest in the story as it relates to the broader Cosmere. Read the three books as a standalone series or, if you enjoy Allomancy and the search for Harmony, you can dive into the follow-up Wax & Wayne series.

Of course, if you want to dive into the entirety of Sanderson's ever-growing catalog, Mistborn provides an amazing entry point for your next obsession.

The Cycle of Fire Trilogy

The Cycle of Fire

the cruel prince, a popular book series for teens

The Cruel Prince

By Holly Black

One of the best (and best-read) trilogies within the romantasy space is The Folk of the Air by Holly Black, which begins with The Cruel Prince. The series delivers all of the tropes you could ask for: enemies to lovers, courtly intrigue, a Faerie prince, and of course, plenty of spice.

Jude's parents are killed and her sisters are stolen away to live in the High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, however, Jude is desperate to belong in the court, despite the prejudice fey have against humans. Prince Cardan, the youngest son of the High King, is especially sour on mortals.

Earning her place at court means defying him and facing the consequences.

The Blade Itself Joe Abercrombie

The Blade Itself

By Joe Abercrombie

While Abercrombie has since expanded the First Law world into a series with two trilogies, multiple standalones, and several short stories, it all began with the original trilogy: The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings

The Coldfire Trilogy

gothic sci-fi books

Black Sun Rising

By C.S. Friedman

As previously seen in this list, some fantasy trilogies base their premise on a simple conceit: a spaceship of human colonizers crash land on an alien planet and over time lose their technological marvels and acclimate to their new home, with varying levels of success.

In Friedman’s trilogy, the planet that becomes humanity’s new home is very similar to Earth—with one notable exception. It’s characterized by an energy force that can interact with the human brain and bring a person’s greatest dreams and fears to life. In the centuries that follow, humanity attempts to forge an uneasy peace with this energy force, but that’s easier said than done.
