In 1975, Octavia E. Butler was an up-and-coming author with two short story publications under her belt. But by 1976, with the release of her debut novel, Patternmaster, she achieved a lifelong ambition—and was on her way to the recognition she deserved.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the late Butler's birth, The Portalist is sharing infographics to help readers understand her life and work. Her debut novel marked a turning point in her career, although it would be years before she was able to quit the jobs she used to support her writing.
