Chaos Erupts in Volcanic First Trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Will extinction, uh, find a way?

The first trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is here, and it's full of dinosaurs galore. The sequel to 2015's Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom will feature former park operations manager Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) and former velociraptor trainer Owen (Chris Pratt) returning to Isla Nublar in advance of a massive volcanic eruption likely to wipe out the surviving dinos. Lava, dinosaur smackdowns, and grave warnings from Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) ensue.

What could go wrong trying to rescue a bunch of dinosaurs from an exploding island? That's what Owen sarcastically wants to know, and we can't help but agree with him. Will the sexual tension between Owen and Claire finally erupt? Will Blue survive? And will dinosaurs outlive humanity? We can't wait to find out.

Judging from this first look, it seems like Fallen Kingdom will explore the environmental and ethical issues raised by protecting the dinosaur species of Isla Nublar from extinction. Claire and Owen certainly have a personal investment in the dinos' fate — particularly Owen, who we see in the trailer reuniting with Blue, the velociraptor who saved his life at the end of the first Jurassic World

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the second film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and the fifth movie overall in the Jurassic Park series based on the books by Michael Crichton. The late Crichton published Jurassic Park in 1990, and 28 years later, people still can't get enough. Before Crichton even published the novel, he'd already sold the film rights to Universal and Steven Spielberg. He was also paid to adapt his own novel into a screenplay, so we know that he had a huge part in shaping the franchise.

Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) Fallen Kingdom features Pratt, Howard, and Goldblum revising their roles from earlier films in the franchise. No word yet on whether Jimmy Buffett will reprise his iconic role of 'Man With His Priorities in Order' from the first film.

Fallen Kingdom will also introduce Benjamin Lockwood, Toby Jones, Ted Levine, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, and Daniella Pineda as new characters. It is slated for release on June 22nd, 2018.
