Variety reports that HBO has tapped the writers of the Emmy-nominated drama series Lovecraft Country, Sonya Winton-Odamtten and Jonathan I. Kidd, to adapt Octavia E. Butler’s novel Fledgling into a pilot.
HBO has also brought Issa Rae (Insecure) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) on as executive producers. The project is in development, and comes from Warner Bros. Television.
Published in 2005, Fledgling follows Shori, a 53-year-old genetically modified vampire that has the physical appearance of a ten-year-old girl.
Shori awakens with severe physical damage and memory loss, and realizes that she needs human blood in order to survive and heal. Fledgling was the final novel that Octavia Butler published before her passing in 2006.

This is one of many adaptations of Butler's work currently in development. In July, it was announced that Parable of the Sower would be adapted into a film by A24. In March, FX revealed it was adapting Butler’s acclaimed work, Kindred, for television.
