A Complete Guide to The Dragonriders of Pern

Anne McCaffrey's epic speculative series spans more than 25 books.

anne mccaffrey's original dragonriders trilogy

Legendary science fiction and fantasy writer Anne McCaffrey would have turned 100 this month. She was a pioneer, the first woman to win both the Hugo Award for Fiction and the Nebula Award, and one of the first sci-fi writers to appear on the New York Times bestseller list. For decades, she enthralled readers with her sprawling ambition and acutely detailed world-building, and nowhere was it more evident than in her masterwork, the Dragonriders of Pern.

Beginning in 1967, the Dragonriders of Pern is a grand tale of warring planets, technology versus the speculative, and, of course, dragons. Set in a future where humans have colonized the planet Pern but returned to a Luddite-esque life without technology, the Pernese are forever at war with Thread, a vicious all-consuming spore that can consume all organic matter, including human flesh. To fight the Thread, humans have bonded with dragons, a union of intense closeness that goes deeper than love and obsession.

Across 24 novels and two short-story collections (some of which were written in collaboration with Todd McCaffrey, Anne’s son, or by him as solo efforts), the Dragonriders of Pern covers thousands of years of history, countless characters, and a dense lore that would put many fantasy writers to shame. While there has never been a film or TV adaptation of Pern, despite several efforts to make it happen, there have been graphic novels, games, and music, as well as an enduring fandom that thrives to this day.

It may seem daunting to fly head-first into a series this vast, but it’s more than worth the effort. You can read the books in either chronological, in-world order or publication order (or you can stick to certain arcs if you so prefer). We’ve presented the Pern saga in chronological order to show off its intense and awe-inducing scale!

Pern seemed perfect, an idyllic land with breathable air and picturesque landscapes. Then the terror came, and suddenly death was everywhere. Humanity had a new enemy: Thread. But soon, a new creature would be born to help them fight this seemingly insurmountable terror.
