The long-running Alien franchise makes its small-screen debut this summer with Alien: Earth. The FX horror series, developed by Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, is set two years before the events of the 1979 Ridley Scott film Alien, which remains one of the greatest sci-fi horrors ever made. 

The sheer terror of cosmic horror continues to haunt us well beyond the narratives of the Alien universe. From H.P. Lovecraft onward, the combination of familiar scares and the vast unknown of the stars has made for some truly terrifying reads.
