When Star Trek first debuted in 1966, no one expected it to become a global phenomenon. The original show was cancelled after three seasons and it was only thanks to the success of reruns starting in 1969. By the late 1970s, those rebroadcast episodes were playing in over 150 domestic markets and 60 international markets. This widespread coverage helped the show gain cult momentum. Without new episodes, Trekkies had to seek out other ways to continue their love for the characters. This led to Star Trek conventions, where fans showed up in the thousands all over the world.

The newfound popularity led to a rebooted animated series and several movies. Then, in 1987, Paramount decided to try taking the USS Enterprise back to television, this time under the helm of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Set approximately a century after Captain James T. Kirk captained the ship, The Next Generation builds on the enemies and worlds on the original series while expanding even further into the far reaches of space.

Star Trek: The Next Generation averaged more than 20 million viewers, exceeding even the most popular shows of the time, and consistently ranked in the top ten among other dramas. It received numerous Emmy Awards, won two Hugo Awards, and a Peabody Award for excellence in television programming. In addition to expanding the story into films, dozens of novel tie-ins were published starting in 1994.

If you love the show but have never gotten into the books, or weren’t sure where to start, we’ve got you covered. Here are eight of the most compelling adventures that Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise went on as they explored the final frontier.
