Recently, the online learning platform MasterClass announced their partnership with Hugo Award-winning author N.K. Jemisin.
Jemisin joins SFF writers Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, R.L. Stine, and Walter Mosley in offering advice and expertise to students from around the world.
The course will center around how to write engaging science fiction and fantasy novels, including the process of worldbuilding and constructing detailed histories and lore.
Jemisin will also teach you her techniques, derived from her background as a professional psychologist, for creating layered and complex characters.

Jemisin is a trailblazer in the science fiction fantasy space. She was the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Bovel, and the first author ever to win that category three consecutive times for every book in her Broken Earth series (The Fifth Season, the Obelisk Gate, and the Stone Sky).
But this success has not come without its troubles. Harassment and bigotry against women and people of Color have long been an issue within the science fiction fantasy community.

Jemisin’s course touches on this painful reality. She provides advice and reaffirms the importance of diversifying the genre, saying, “There are people out there who need your example; who need you to go forth and fight that battle so they won’t have to fight as hard.”
