When it comes to science fiction and fantasy novels, the word epic gets thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean? Outside of raving about how amazing a book or series is, epic science fiction has distinct elements that set it apart from your everyday sci-fi novel.

An epic sci-fi story will often span several books, but sometimes, a standalone can still be epic in nature depending on the content and length, particularly if the story spans generations. The narratives will be sprawling. This can be across time, cultures, worlds, or even a vast cast of characters. Because it’s sci-fi, the technology will be futuristic and mind-bending. The battles will be dazzling and immense, and when it comes to the stakes, they aren’t simply life or death, but entire worlds will hang in the balance.

Some of the most popular science fiction stories of all-time are epic. Star Wars, Dune, Foundation, and The Three-Body Problem are examples of stories that have the deep themes, dashing heroes, and world-spanning conflicts that draw readers in to the endless possibility of these worlds and allow their imaginations to run wild. If you’re looking for a new galaxy to get lost in, here are some epic science fiction books to dive into.
