The classic masterpiece of science fiction, Dune, was first published in 1965 by Frank Herbert. The book's base series is comprised of six novels by Herbert. These inspired a prequel trilogy by his son, Brian Herbert, and science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson.
The Dune franchise also features short stories, by Herbert, his son, and Anderson; comic books and video games based on the franchise; multiple television miniseries adaptations; and David Lynch's 1984 feature-length film. Now, a brand new film adaptation directed by Denis Villeneuve is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on October 1st.
The story follows the Paul Atreides, the son of a noble family, as he oversees the protection of the galaxy's most vital and valuable asset, the spice. But speaking of planets—the stars have their own thoughts on this vibrant franchise.
With a wealth of villains, are Scorpios still considered the baddies of the zodiac? Who in the Dune universe has the heart of a Lion? And ultimately, which Dune character are you based on your zodiac sign?
(Proceed with caution! Some descriptions below contain spoilers for the Dune franchise.)
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Paul Atreides
Starting strong, our list opens with Dune protagonist Paul Atreides (portayed in the new film by Timothée Chalamet) as the sign of the Ram. Those born under this sign have a courage and confidence that often make them unerringly determined. This makes them fond of leadership positions, which they tend to excel in.
Aries is a sign of young energy and new beginnings, and they have the strength to bear burdens upon their backs. Any fan of Dune in any of its iterations knows that Paul's abilities, military training, and cultivated skills of leadership give him a great sense of purpose. His legacy as an eventual Emperor is hard fought—for better or worse.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Gurney Halleck
Who better to exemplify the sign of the Bull than Gurney Halleck? Portrayed in the new film by Josh Brolin, Halleck is a character known for his brutal, ruthless strength. Yet his loyalty to those he cares for speaks to his heart.
Beyond that, he also has a romantically artistic side, proficient in the baliset and prone to spinning verses from the Orange Catholic Bible. Those born under the sign of Taurus might find much in common with him, as they are often described as steadfastly reliable, deeply devoted, uncompromisingly stubborn, and true lovers of music.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Leto Atreides
This air sign is one that's known for its dual nature. While incredibly charismatic and fun, Geminis can often turn on a dime to be very serious and focused. As a mutable sign, they are always looking for change. Luckily, those under this sign are also highly adaptable.
Duke Leto Atreides (portrayed in the new film by Oscar Isaac) is a perfect example of these traits. After being sent to the planetary fief Arrakis, it is largely his personal charm that gains him supporters. As a leader, he is thought to be very fair, lending to his serious plans to rise in standing. He is also seen as compassionate, another trait of a gentle Gemini.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Piter De Vries
While Cancers are typically portrayed as too soft to be truly sadistic, there's no character in Dune better suited to this water sign than the wicked and twisted Piter De Vries (portrayed in the new film by David Dastmalchian).
Those born under the sign of the Crab are seen as especially emotionally adept—De Vries just uses this skill to play on the emotions of others. As a strength, Cancers are very persuasive, but the other side of this coin portrays them as slick manipulators.
In his service to House Harkonnen, De Vries uses the kidnapping and murder of Dr. Wellington Yueh's wife to ensure the betrayal of House Atreides, proving his cunning.

Leo (July 23-August 22)
Duncan Idaho
In the new film, Jason Momoa portrays Duncan Idaho—a character who easily encompasses the qualities of a Leo.
At their core, Leos are defined by their passion. Besides being a ladies' man, Duncan's passion is exemplified by his fierce loyalty to the Atreides.
As "king of the jungle," this sign of the Lion tends to dominate in every field they take on—something readers might have see in Duncan's remarkable finesse when fighting.
Leos are also a fire sign. As an element which often represents rebirths, the fact that this sign is also fixed—meaning typically set in its ways—might seem contradictory. However, as portrayed through Duncan's multiple rebirths and enduring steadfastness over thousands of years, one can see how these traits work together.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Gaius Helen Mohiam
Virgos tend to be an acquired taste (as one myself, I can say that). Analytical creatures, this earth sign is also seen as calculating. Practical, yet overly critical. Hard workers, while others might say severe.
In Dune, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (portrayed in the new film by Charlotte Rampling), sits on the nefarious side of the scale for the sign of the Virgin. In the prequel novels, Mohiam is depicted using blackmail to further the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme.
A little too devoted to practicality, Mohiam is willing to kill anyone—even a child—to ensure all plots go according to plan. She becomes a formidable force amidst the conspiracy to topple the rule of Paul Atreides.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Chani
Zendaya portrays Chani in the new film—a character who shares a lot of similarities with the sign of the Scales.
Chani is a woman of great intellect, who also embodies the vital traits of compassion and courage. Libra is a sign of justice, peace, and harmony, values woven into Chani's actions as a person who is deeply considerate of the emotions of all those around her. Like this air sign, Chani is incredibly diplomatic, as seen in her long negotiations with the outgoing Emperor.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
Look, it's no secret that the astrology community tends to view those born under the sign of the Scorpion as a bit villainous. In my previous zodiac posts, I've tried to stray from such cut and dry thinking, as all signs have their positive and negatives. But if the shoe fits...
It's true that Scorpio is a resourceful sign that is both brave and powerful. But it's also true that some can be highly manipulative, as well as violent.
In Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's (portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård in the movie) case, his resourcefulness meets manipulation when he utilizes his skill at blackmail and general treachery to expand his family's legacy. As the architect of Duke Leto's demise, he's also, you know, pretty violent.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Liet-Kynes
In a considerable departure from the original novel, in the new film the character of Liet-Kynes is portrayed by a woman—Sharon Duncan-Brewster.
In the book, Liet is a planetologist and ecologist on Arrakis, dedicating himself to terraforming the harsh planet into one full of life, greenery, and open water. As Sagittarius is another mutable sign, this drive for change comes as no surprise.
The sign of the Archer also tends to be idealistic and philosophic, traits which are seen throughout Liet-Kynes' efforts to align with Duke Leto and make Dune a better place.

Capricorn (December 23-January 19)
Glossu Rabban Harkonnen
Capricorn is the sign of the Goat, which can be a bit hard to manage, if you're looking at its more negative traits. Take, for example, Glossu Rabban Harkonnen (portrayed in the new film by Dave Bautista).
The nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, he lacks the nuanced finesse of his uncle and relies mostly on his brutish nature. How many times have you seen a goat run horn-first into something?
Capricorns are categorized by an unforgiving and unmoving nature, displayed darkly through Glossu's inherited sadism. Of the sign's good qualities, Glossu is certainly disciplined. But he also stands in as the earth sign's tendency to dislike most things. Such as his father, whom he murders...
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Stilgar
Though it is the sign of the Water Bearer, Aquarius is actually the last air sign of the zodiac. As such, it's an elevated sign—one that's not rooted in practicality like earth signs, but rather reaching to fight for causes and push for progression.
Those under the sign of Aquarius tend to be independent humanitarians. They face risk directly, and despise limitations.
Stilgar (portayed in the new film by Javier Bardem) is a great example of this within the world of Dune. Stilgar is considered impressive even by Duncan Idaho, who pledges loyalty to the Fremen due to Stilgar's character.
Stilgar shares Liet Kynes' dream of transforming Dune into a lush land of prosperity, and he eventually rises to become the general of the Emperor of the Known Universe.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Lady Jessica
Could anyone else embody the traits of the sign of the Fish better than Lady Jessica (portrayed in the new film by Rebecca Ferguson)?
Those born under the sign of Pisces are thought to be deeply compassionate, wise, and ruled by the heart. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to those of this water sign becoming martyrs.
Official concubine of Duke Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica is no different. Because of the genuine love that she develops for Leto, she betrays the orders of the Bene Gesserit. Lady Jessica becomes the wise Reverend Mother of Arrakis, despite the terrible costs she knows it will require.
A mutable sign of change, the transformations Lady Jessica tosses into the universe for love are not well thought of, and are referred to by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood as "the Jessica Crime" for millennia.
