Fantasy is usually seen as a genre of high-stakes: grand battles, fantastical creatures, nefarious forces, and magical abilities well beyond human comprehension. But what if you want all of the fun of fantasy with less stress? That’s where cozy fantasy comes in. This subgenre has hugely grown in popularity over the past couple of years. You can expect low-key stories, cozy ambiance, comforting situations, and lots of tea.
Part of the subgenre's growth can be traced back to the work of Travis Baldree, a writer and audiobook narrator who created the Legends & Lattes series (which includes the prequel Bookshops & Bonedust). The warm, comforting series imagines a brutal orc soldier who decides to give up a life of war in favor of opening a coffee shop. Readers were instantly enraptured, and cozy fantasy has only gotten more prevalent since. Here are eight books sure to feel like a big hug for fans of Bookshops & Bonedust.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches
Mika Moon runs an online account where she cosplays as a witch. It's cute and low-stakes, but it's also a good way for her to practice her magic without anyone knowing the truth. As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika has to keep a low profile and avoid other magical beings. But then she receives an unexpected invitation to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House, where she's offered a teaching position to look after a trio of young witches who are struggling to control their magic.
At Nowhere House, Mika's life is turned upside down, not only by her new charges but also by the ensemble of oddballs who live there, including the handsome but prickly librarian who views her as a potential threat to Nowhere House's quiet way of life. Not everyone likes witches, and when danger knocks on their door, it's up to Mika to look out for her new found family.
Can't Spell Treason Without Tea

But Reyna works as one of the Queen’s private guards, and Kianthe is the most powerful mage in existence. Leaving behind their old lives to begin a new one is easier said than done.
After an assassin takes Reyna hostage, she decides she’s done with risking her life for a monarch who barely acknowledges her existence. Kianthe is sick of her responsibilities and the expectations placed upon her. Now is the time to make their dreams come true, opening a shop in Tawney, a town full of dragons. A quiet life awaits them, but first they need to deal with the fact that they've both technically committed treason.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built
Many centuries ago, robots were built with the express purpose of helping the humans of Panga. After they gained sentience, they laid down their tools and decided to form their own community in the middle of the woods. They haven't been seen from since. In that time, Panga has become a veritable utopia, and Sibling Dex, a tea monk, is beginning their work of service through the region. Their job is to offer a kind ear and hot beverage to those who need it.
What they don't expect is for a robot to walk toward them and ask the question, "What do people need?" The answer to that question depends on who you ask and how. Dex guides a new friend into a brave new world to help it find those answers.
A Wizard's Guide To Defensive Baking
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn’t like the wizards charged with defending the city. While her friends and contemporaries have incredible abilities that allow them to control lightning or make the earth move, her skills lie solely in the realms of baking. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. That makes her good for low-level tricks like dancing gingerbread men but not much in terms of high-risk situations.
But Mona’s life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. Someone is killing off magic folk in Mona's city, and it lies upon her to find the culprit. She'll need some allies, so it's time to whisk up a recipe and make a bread army…
That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf (Mead Mishaps Book 2)
How can you resist a title like that? Brie is a cheesemaker who has the worst luck in love. It doesn't help that she's a bit of a walking disaster. It's just like her to throw a drink at someone's head, only to miss entirely and hit a stranger behind them. To make matters worse, it wasn't a drink but a love potion, and the stranger she hit was a lactose-intolerant werewolf who is now convinced that Brie is his fated mate.
She should fix her mistakes, but there's also a pirate ship full of demons that's just moved into town and someone is kidnapping local girls, so of course it falls upon Brie to save the day. Having a hot guy to help you do your chores and tell you how beautiful you are is a nice perk.
The Spellshop
Kiela is a born introvert, which makes her perfect for the position of librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium. She and her assistant Caz, a sentient spider plant, have spent the past decade cloistered away from the rest of the world, protecting the empire's most precious spell books. When a revolution begins and the library goes up in flames, she and Caz flee with all the spell books they can carry and head to a remote island that was once her childhood home.
She must create a new life for herself, one where she can make some money by creating the best jam the locals have ever tasted (with a little help from those spell books). Kiela decides to throw caution to the wind and open the island’s first-ever and much-needed secret spellshop. Magic should be for everyone, after all.
The Honey Witch
Marigold Claude has always preferred the company of the spirits of the meadow over any of the suitors who’ve tried to woo her. So it seems ideal when her grandmother whisks her away to the tiny island of Innisfree and their beautiful family cottage. Marigold has the opportunity to become the next Honey Witch, a position that comes with incredible powers and a chance at an amazing independent life. But there's a catch: nobody can ever fall in love with her.
Lottie Burke is a grumpy skeptic who thinks magic is the stuff of fairy stories. But when she suddenly shows up on Marigold's doorstep, sparks begin to fly. Marigold can't resist the chance to prove Lottie wrong, but the more time they spend together, the more they begin to test that one rule of the Honey Witch. What happens if they were to break it?
Rewitched
Belladonna Blackthorn is struggling with a very millennial case of burnout. Balancing work at her beloved Lunar Books with protecting it from her toxic boss who wants to run it into the ground, is tough enough. Add to that her endless need to conceal her witchcraft and it's no wonder she's exhausted. But when her 30th birthday brings a summons from her coven, and a trial that tests her worthiness as a witch, Belle must contend with possibly losing her magic forever. She's got the whole of October to fix things and she'll need all the help she can get, including from that annoyingly handsome watchman who has sworn to protect her. And all she really wants to do is curl up with a good book...
