The great Samuel R. Delany has added another accolade to his long list of achievements.
Anisfield-Wolf jury chair Henry Louis Gates Jr. announced on Monday that Delany has been given the organization's lifetime achievement award, in recognition of how his "prescient fiction, and his subtle literary criticism, have helped us better know our humanity."
The announcement can be seen in the video below.
According to Gates Jr., the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recognize books and authors with "fresh insights on race and the human condition."
The jury committee for the 86th annual awards included Gates Jr., Rita Dove, Joyce Carol Oates, Simon Schama, and Steven Pinker. The decision to recognize Delany with the lifetime achievement award was unanimous.
