Joey thinks she has her future in order. She's preparing for law school and has a great relationship with her boyfriend Astor. Spending the Summer with his affluent family at their lavish estate in Crestfall Bluffs seems like the natural next step for their romance, even if she doesn't feel wholly comfortable around his snobby relatives. But things are far worse than she could have predicted, when she uncovers a macabre history of cannibalism at the heart of Astor's ancestry. Can she escape it with her life or will she be willing to give up her soul to join them at the dinner table?

Uzumaki
The king of horror manga Junji Ito is notorious for his sickeningly detailed illustrations that blend the ridiculous and the horrifying. His most famous work, Uzumaki, has a unique set-up: what if spirals were evil? Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed by spirals. They're everywhere, and they're driving the locals mad. Bodies are shifting, the weather is twisting, and everywhere you look, there's a spiral that will engulf you. Can Shuichi and Kirie, two teenagers in love, find a way to escape the inevitable?

Black Hole (Pantheon Graphic Library)
In the suburbs of Seattle in the mid-1970s, a group of teenagers try to navigate the nightmare of growing up. A strange plague has taken over. Anyone who engages in sexual intercourse risks contracting a unique disease that turns them into monsters. Some of the transformations are subtle, others are all-consuming, forcing the sufferers to flee to the woods. The cruelty of adolescence grows more heated as the teens become divided between sufferers and "normal," desperate to figure out who they are, monster or otherwise. And then the murders start…

Vivisectionary
In extreme and unflinching detail, Kate Lacour creates tableaus and medical art of the strangest and most misunderstood creatures of the great beyond. What does the inside of a mermaid look like? What medicinal properties do unicorn horns possess? Can you make supermarket ground beef from other, far less ethical sources? Vivisectionary creates a whole world of macabre butchery, illustrated in hypnotic but grotesque detail, offering an alternate world where the magical and gross dominate.

Animal Man (2011-2014) Vol. 1: The Hunt
In DC Comics, Animal Man is Buddy Baker, a hero with the ability to harness the powers of animals. When the New 52 reboot of the DC Universe took place in 2011, Jeff Lemire was brought on board to reimagine Animal Man. The result is a striking blend of traditional superhero action fare, metaphysical panic, and some gnarly horror. Buddy is trying to live a normal life with his family, but his four-year-old daughter Maxine has started to develop her own dangerous powers, which are far more terrifying than anything he could have imagined.

Berserk Volume 1
The grandiosity of Berserk, a dark fantasy horror manga inspired by Medieval Europe, is the stuff of legend. Kentaro Miura's magnum opus has been heralded as one of the best-selling and most acclaimed manga series in history. But it's not for the faint of heart. Guts is a mercenary, born of a hanged mother and raised by an abusive captain. In his wanderings, he meets Griffith, the beautiful and ruthless leader of the Band of the Hawk. Their friendship turns deadly as Griffith's lust for power consumes him. The blend of high fantasy with brutal horror made Berserk a hit (imagine if Conan the Barbarian was crossed with Hellraiser), but beware if you are weak-stomached.
