This month sees the 40th anniversary of the publication of Howl's Moving Castle, one of the most beloved children's fantasy novels of the 20th century. The chances are you're familiar with it, or at the very least its gorgeous anime adaptation from Studio Ghibli. The book is the work of Diana Wynne Jones, the legendary British author whose works defined the childhood of so many readers.
Jones has been cited as an inspiration and muse for legions of authors, from Philip Pullman and Robin McKinley to Terry Pratchett and Megan Whalen Turner. Her books are funny, hugely imaginative, and full of sparky heroes who can hold their own in worlds of total chaos.
If you’re new to her work or eager for a re-read, here are some of the best books by Diana Wynne Jones.
