Coulrophobia is the name given to a fear of clowns. While they were not designed to be scary (they were meant to bring people smiles and joy), it's not surprising that so many people find them to be utterly terrifying. Between characters like the Joker and real-life figures such as John Wayne Gacy, clowns have gotten a bad rap over the past few decades. Evil and killer clowns are commonplace in fiction. This October sees the release of not one but two major movies focused on disturbed clowns: Joker: Folie a Deux and Terrifier 3. For those looking for a freaky fright from the comfort of their own homes, here are eight creepy clown stories sure to have you worried about big red noses and rictus grins as you go to sleep…

It

By Stephen King

You can’t talk about scary clowns in fiction without mentioning Pennywise, the true king of all interdimensional demons who represent evil in its truest form. Stephen King’s IT has been terrifying readers for generations and could easily be viewed as the source of our societal fear of clowns (King himself has said it’s time for us to get over such things, but how are we meant to do that when Pennywise lives?!).

In the town of Derry, Maine, a malevolent spirit dominates every corner of life. The adults turn a blind eye to it, but the kids are forced to bear witness to the violence, the cruelty, and the dread. In the storm drains, in the sewers, It lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare the kids could imagine. Those kids became adults, fleeing Derry and forgetting all about It. But It never forgot about them, and now they must return home and destroy the evil before it devours another generation.
