Jack Vance grew up on the bookish adventures created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne on his grandfather’s California ranch. Though economic troubles would keep him from pursuing an education right away, he did eventually graduate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1942. He first began writing shortly after, getting hired as a screenwriter for the Captain Video television series.

Over the course of his career, Vance went on to publish 56 novels, including five under the pen names Ellery Queen, Alan Wade, and Peter Held. He also wrote enough short stories to fill 20 collections, 13 novellas, and his autobiography.

Though Vance did write mysteries and thrillers, he was known for his visionary work in science fiction and fantasy. Instead of focusing on interplanetary conflict, he created interesting worlds where the tension came from socioeconomic systems and the consequences of political machinations within those systems.

Vance died on May 26, 2013, and was widely recognized by leading authors for his influence in the science fiction and fantasy space. If you’ve ever been curious about Vance’s work, here are seven of his most popular science fiction and fantasy novels to get started.
