When people think about knights in shining armor, women don't usually come to mind. But why not? I've never come across a problem a woman couldn't solve, and Chappell Roan is proof they look great in the metal garb.

Whether you're in it for the grit of battle or the romance of chivalry, knights of the fairer sex is are a growing trend in the fantasy genre. So spit in the eye of misogyny, pick up your sword, and lock in.

Here are eight of the best books about lady knights!

The Isle in the Silver Sea

The Isle in the Silver Sea

By Tasha Suri

Simran is a witch of the woods, while Vina serves as a knight in the Queen's court. These two women are drawn together—can't help falling in love with one another—but it is this very pull that will be their downfall.

They have been fated to fall for each other across hundreds of lifetimes, and their romance is always the cause of their doom. Now they are desperate to resist their desires, and even more desperate to find a way to break the cycle.

As they search for a way to change the tides of fate, a mysterious assassin sets out to destroy stories such as theirs. In order to survive, the lovers must weave a story even stronger than the one the hand of fate has penned.

The Second Death of Locke

The Second Death of Locke

By V. L. Bovalino

Kier is a mage. Grey Flynn is the knight that has dedicated her life to him. She's not only the blade that protects him, but his healer and a well of power for him to draw from.

Both blood and magic tie this pair together, but that is one truth that Grey keeps secret even from Kier.

While on a quest to protect a child of an enemy kingdom, Grey and Kier get pulled into a very dangerous mission. Now Grey must determine how much she's willing to sacrifice in order to keep her secret.

After all,  she's no typical magical well. If Grey dies, all magic dies with her.

Lady Hotspur

Lady Hotspur

By Tessa Gratton

The motto of the Lady Knights is, “Strike fast, love hard, live forever.” These fierce women have dedicated themselves to a struggling kingdom, swearing to protect Banna Mora, the prospective heir.

When the throne is taken over by a rebellion, however, Mora must decide between sacrificing everything she loves whilst letting a king-killer reap the rewards and taking up arms against the new heir, her childhood best friend and head of the Lady Knights, Hal Bolingbrooke.

Hal hates being a prince. She far prefers the Throne of Misrule, a position of honor in a wild underground nether-court ruled by passion. While she wants to meet the expectations of those she loves most, that would mean giving up what she most holds dear.

Standing between these two formidable Princes is Lady Hotspur, the bold knight who will decide their fates by lending her support and turning the tides of a brewing war.

First Test

First Test

By Tamora Pierce

Tortall has just instated a new rule that allows women to train for knighthood. Keladry of Mindelan is the first brave girl to take advantage of this new shift in policy.

Kel has spent years in the Yamani Islands where women are incredible warriors. Now that she's back home, she wants to forge a similar path, and believes she has what it takes to face the hazing and brutal schedule of a page. But beyond the regular trials and obstacles, Lord Wyldon stands in her way.

Wyldon is a training master adamantly against girls becoming knights. He tells Kel that she must complete a one-year trial that no male page has ever had to go through. While it's just one more thing differentiating Kel and her fellow trainees, she refuses to be underestimated.

No matter how unfair the test is, she will fight until she succeeds.

The Everlasting

The Everlasting

By Alix E. Harrow

Sir Una Everlasting was the greatest hero Dominion had ever seen. She began life as an orphaned girl, but rose to prominence as a knight who died for both queen and country. Her magnificent tale was carried on by songs and stories, but the reality at the heart of her story has long since been forgotten.

Hundreds of years later, failed soldier and troubled scholar Owen Mallory is enchanted with Una's tale. This story draws him to war, to the archives, and then into the past itself. Time tangles around Una and Owen as the two of them are destined to tell the same story time and time again.

A story that always ends the same way—unless they can figure out a way to rewrite history.

The Princess Knight

The Princess Knight

By Cait Jacobs

Domhnall and Clía are meant to be—at least that's what everyone seems to think. As heirs to neighboring kingdoms, it seems they are an alliance fated by the gods. That is, until Domhnall wrecks everything by refusing to propose.

Trying to hold everything together, Clía trails after Domhnall to the acclaimed military academy Caisleán Cósta. While the castle is notorious for being brutal, she figures dueling can't actually be all that hard.

Warrior Ronan has sacrificed everything for his place at Caisleán Cósta, and has sworn never to lose focus, even for cute blonde princesses. He doesn't mean to be charmed by Clía, but her determination to prove herself is painfully familar. He figures it can't hurt to train her, even if it makes his heart flutter…and his best friend is Domhnall.

Not too far off, a very real war is brewing, and it's going to put them all to the test in this absolutely delightful book which reads like Legally Blonde meets A Knight's Tale.

The Knight and the Moth

The Knight and the Moth

By Rachel Gillig

For the last nine years, Sybil Delling has wished to have no dreams at all. She, like the other foundling girls who exchanged a decade of service for a home, is a Diviner. These dreams help her predict terrible events before they take place, and they draw both lords and commoners from all over the kingdom .

As Sybil and her sisters' service draws to an end, the cathedral is visited by a mysterious knight. On top of being ill-mannered, heretical, and impossibly handsome, Rodrick holds no respect for Sybil's visions. But as the Diviners begin to disappear one by one, he is Sybil's only hope in finding them.

Outside the cloister, the world is overcome with peril. The answers Sybil needs lie only with the gods—and only a heretic can defeat them.
