Love is at the center of many of film and TV's best fantasy works. As viewers, we're helpless against falling for dashing heroes and charming rogues.
Maybe, though, we don't always have the best taste…
When I set out to make the list of best fantasy boyfriends, I ran into a bit of trouble. That is, I realized there really weren't very many good boyfriends in general. Sure, there were plenty that were handsome and even more that I had spent plenty of time romanticizing. But a lot of them were bringing the bare minimum to the table, and a lot of others had a creep factor in retrospect.
During my reflection, it seems as though maybe science fiction has a much greater wealth of good male love interests. But that's a list for another day, perhaps. After all, if there are so few good fantasy boyfriends, I definitely want to be able to sniff them. If for no other reason than to, you know, highlight healthy relationships.
So, I have scoured every screen to bring you the cream of the crop. Here are the best boyfriends of fantasy film and TV!
Aragorn (The Lord of the Rings)

Be honest, your first fantasy crush came from The Lord of the Rings, right? I was more of a Frodo girl myself, but overtime I've come to see the Aragorn appeal.
The forbidden romance aspect of Aragorn and Arwen's love story adds an extra layer of swoon-worthiness. It shows a deep devotion to do whatever it takes to be together, no matter what elf politics or kingly destiny demands.
Aragorn is dark and broody, which is undeniably attractive. But what makes him even better boyfriend material is his quiet kindness, steadfast loyalty, unshakable bravery, and solid wisdom.
Tristan Thorn (Stardust)

Sometimes good boyfriends don't make good first impressions. And sure, Tristan was on a quest to win a different woman's hand in marriage when he met Yvaine, but they never would have found each other if he wasn't!
And, okay, he briefly takes her captive, but that can be attributed to passion and determination. Plus, who doesn't love a little bit of “enemies” to lovers?
While Tristan isn't a very good communicator, he is heroic, trusting, and hopelessly romantic. Who wouldn't want a boyfriend inclined to grand gestures?
He'd follow you anywhere, even if it's to spend an eternity in the stars.
Dyson Thornwood (Lost Girl)

Perhaps more of an obscure choice, Dyson hails from the underappreciated 5-season Syfy series Lost Girl, which follows a succubus named Bo as she navigates the world of Light and Dark Fae.
Dyson is a wolf-shifter who begins a relationship with Bo for both the benefit of keeping an eye on her and keeping her unconventional appetite fed. However, it's not long before he develops intense feelings for her.
He's a fiercely loyal partner (there's a joke to be made somewhere about “man's best friend”). While typically rigid with rules, he does not hesitate to bend them when it comes to Bo. Dyson even sacrificed the thing most important to him to aid Bo in battle.
Most romantic, perhaps, is the patience in his love. He doesn't consider Bo a person to possess, and values her happiness above all else. As such, when Bo falls in love with two people, he steps aside so she can have a fulfilling human romance. After all, his lifespan is much longer, and he will still be there when she's ready.
Westley (The Princess Bride)

You get the best of both worlds with Westley in The Princess Bride, also known as the Dread Pirate Roberts.
With farm boy Westley, you get quiet devotion and gentleness. You get perhaps the most romantic phrase of all time, “As you wish.” (Rivaled only by “I can fix that,” but unfortunately Holes isn't fantasy enough to fit on this list.)
He's flirty, patient, and heart flutteringly sweet.
When he takes on the mantle of the Dread Pirate Roberts, you get all the perks of falling for a bad boy. He's cocky and unafraid to challenge the one he loves. He would kill to protect the people he cares about.
Plus, who doesn't love a man who can make them laugh?
Johnny Martin (Penelope)

Isn't the ideal boyfriend one who loves you exactly as you are, warts and all? Well, pig nose and all, in this case.
Okay, so he gets off to a rocky start as a gambling addict operating under a fake name, but the latter isn't even really his fault. And you have to respect a man that acknowledges he has a problem and works to get his life together. Especially if he's inspired by how much you're thriving.
A passionate pianist and an insightful, kind man, Johnny definitely deserves a place on this list.
Doc Holliday (Wynonna Earp)

I'll be the first in line to admit that Doc Holliday is rough around the edges (and well into his interior). But also I don't care. This article is about the best fantasy boyfriends, not the most perfect fantasy boyfriends.
Okay, so he's an immortal, sharp-shooting cowboy who drinks and sleeps around. He can be a little selfish sometimes, and he's quick to cruel words when he's hurt. He is inclined to take the easy way out when he's faced with his own mortality.
But he would do anything not only for the woman that he loves, but also for her family, which he loves as his own. There is no stone he would leave unturned when the object of his heart is in danger.
He is empathetic and nonjudgmental. He can look at Wynonna, who is often a bigger mess than he is, and see all of the wonderful parts of her beneath that chaos. He has an unshakable belief in the people that have earned his trust.
And there's something to be said about his passion. Then there's those puppy dog eyes he whips out once in a while…
He's not the reason Wynonna Earp is one of my favorite shows, but he's definitely a major factor.
